It's Time for Some 2016 Spoiler TV Character Cup Preview!

My own original fan art for SpoilerTV's 2016 Character Cup

As SpoilerTV's Character Cup is about to start, it is now official that the SpoilerTV competitions are the Round 7 of 2016 World Fandom Championship, with Teen Choice Awards being Round 8. The Round 7 will also have a special rule where there are two separate competitions that counts towards separate championships: Character Cup which counts towards only Character's Championship, and Favorite TV Series Competition which counts towards almost all World Championship standings.

Incidentally, the same week where the TV Character Cup nominations started is also the same week where Primetime Emmy nominations are released and an upcoming update for my favorite PC game is announced, which equals having a quite busy blogging activity barrage. Take a note I haven't seen all the Emmy nominations yet save for several things: Rachel Bloom not nominated, while Taraji P. Henson, Tatiana Maslany and Maisie Williams nominated, plus Game of Thrones dominates. I will preview Primetime Emmys right probably after TCAs or even some time before it because the award will be on 18th September which is quite a long time, about two months from this post. As for my other updates not related to fandom stuff, they will be in RENDY'S BLOG, another personal blog of mine with more race car stuffs.

The preview for Favorite TV Competition will come much, much later, once it's about to begin that is.

SpoilerTV Character Cup pits together TV show characters, both still currently airing and finished/cancelled shows, in a March Madness-styled polling competition. If you are experienced in Fandom March Madness, then you should be able to grasp this competition in no time as this competition shares the same vein with each other, especially the voting time which lasts for 24 hours as well as the ability to submit bracket predictions. There are, however, differences between SpoilerTV and FMM: in a period of time, SpoilerTV' match-ups will be more focused on smaller amounts in each period, so SpoilerTV's competition takes a slightly longer time. Another difference would be the match-ups based on overall ranking regardless of whether the show a character represents is finished or still running, whereas FMM has characters divided into four categories based on their series' genre, and apparently SpoilerTV's competition lacks the "2-year eligibility rule" FMM possesses, allowing for a free choice in competing characters.

Last year, Samantha "Root" Groves of Person of Interest paved her way to victory after a big win against Mickey Milkovich of Shameless by a match of 78,1 vs. 31,9, eventually becoming a clean sweep for POI in SpoilerTV grounds and also the 2015 World Fandom Championship (also thanks to winning the year's Zimbio TV Couples' March Challenge with Shaw), all in its first year. Eventual FMM winner Peggy Carter also finished the competition in a respective third place while Dana Scully of The X-Files became the highest finished shows finisher in fourth after reaching the Final 4. As The X-Files has been revived this year, it will compete in the "Currently Airing" roster this year compared to last year. Meanwhile, this year sees the absence of Root due to the rule that phases out the previous Character Cup winners for future competitors, alongside Jack Shephard, Castiel, and Dean Winchester. So that means, Person of Interest must find another person of interest to represent Person of Interest, although that it won't be possible for them to climb up to the top of this year's WFC standings once more.

For your information, this year's running is quite unique, as the author would say: there are more nominations compared to last year, yet 76% of these were single nominations (read: only nominated 1 character). As the result, there are 62 characters competing, with two of the most-nominated characters gaining a free-pass to Round 2 (go figure!). In addition, characters tied for the highest number of nominations have their bracket positions calibrated via "Ranking Poll", while tied nominations from the same shows (in this case, Wynonna Earp, first debut in the fandom competition, and Orphan Black) battled in the "Nomination Poll", where the fandoms has decided between Wynonna Earp and Waverly Earp, and Cosima, Helena, Sarah and Felix respectively, which in turn ended them up with Wynonna and Cosima representing their respective fandoms. Let's call this "Round 0", "the Prologue", or something.

(ANOTHER) PRIMARY THREAT: Person of Interest returns to SpoilerTV grounds this time with Sameen Shaw. Last year, Root took the Character Cup victory, but will Shaw do the same this year? (Image: eyesofwitt.tumblr.com)

Person of Interest unsurprisingly returns to the SpoilerTV grounds this time with Sameen Shaw, as we will witness how will Shaw fare against others. The 100's Lexa is also in the race, which acts as both as a journey for her third consecutive polling competition win in Zimbio and E!Online together with Clarke and a possible rematch in the 2015 Zimbio March Madness race. Also, Shadowhunters' Alec Lightwood has a chance to strengthen his poll competition strength after being a runner-up in this year's Top TV Couple alongside Magnus Bane. Other confirmed participants include Elliot Alderson of Mr. Robot (the first time Mr. Robot gets in the poll competition like Wynonna does), Kara Danvers of Supergirl, and Rebecca Bunch of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, alongside some of the common poll competition figures like The Flash's Barry Allen, HTGAWM's Annalise Keating, OUAT's Regina Mills, Grey's Meredith Grey, and Vincent Keller of Beauty and the Beast. iZombie's Liv Moore is also enlisted as the participant, and is her third poll competition this year, and apparently Castle's Kate Beckett has a final shot to settle a great finish for Castle, same story for Peggy Carter where this time she's pressured to repeat her best finish of third last year, and yes, there's The X-Files's Dana Scully on board too as a participant from the currently-running shows roster. Unfortunately, The Vampire Diaries do not make it to this competition, but perhaps it might appear in the Favorite TV Series Cup soon?

One thing for certain is that this is the final round of WFC's Character's Championship this year. As previously posted in the Teen Choice Awards preview post, the Character's Championship is pretty much done for and it will be a matter of time for Lexa to finish at least in Round 2. Even if she isn't scoring any points though, the condition will still be unchanged albeit the fact that both will be joint champions representing The 100. While Teen Wolf takes over the third row of the Character's Championship, characters from Once Upon A Time and Outlander have a better footing: Teen Wolf's Stiles Stilinski limped in last year's second round which wouldn't make their Top 3 finish certain, but both OUAT (with Regina Mills) and Outlander (with Jamie Fraser) had a better shot at winning, with last year's finish of Sweet 16 and Elite 8 respectively, and if one of these Sci-Fi/Fantasy heroes won the competition, it'll surely a free pass to the third place in the standings. However, let's not forget Shadowhunters has Alec, and this will be his first ever fight in the SpoilerTV grounds after a successive Top TV Couple run with Magnus Bane, combined with the fact that he is also viable for the final third place in the standings. In the end, all eyes will be on Stiles, Alec, Jamie, and Regina for the third place of the Character's Championship, but still, there's Shaw and Lexa here, and spoiler alert both Shaw and Jon Snow of Game of Thrones automatically go to the second round, and there's going to be a single-actor battle reserved for Alycia Debnam-Carey (Lexa & Alicia Clark), Mary McDonnell (Sharon Raydor & Laura Roslin), and Christian Kane (Eliot Spencer & Jake Stone) in the very first round!

As an added note, I tend to focus more on competitors from current shows, and I did campaign for newer shows like Mr. Robot, Wynonna Earp, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, though the last one was the only one I watched a little. The longevity of Buffy Summers, LOST (with Ben Linus on board), Olivia Dunham, Lorelai Gilmore, Leslie Knope, and Brooke Davis really colored the competition and sets SpoilerTV's competition apart from others (even in FMM, there's a 2-year cut-off for TV shows and Movies competing, which would make their presence in FMM impossible). As I also have a soft spot with Lorelai Gilmore, I might as well try campaigning her for the win. I'll let my bracket predictions speak for itself...

So, if you want to get down to the action, visit SpoilerTV's 2016 Character Cup page here and vote for your favorites each round! I would recommend you to subscribe Character Cup updates via e-mail as it will be much helpful for you to follow the competition, and you could also try your hands on bracket predictions as well!

So, fandoms, ready to vote for your characters? Let's get it on!

2016 Character Cup
This was a great read. I didn't follow the other contests so it was interesting hearing their results. Thanks for promoting the Character Cup. I love, love, love the banner you created. It's much more fun than the official one. I don't know anything about making banners but if you made one after the second round with the remaining 16 characters in it, I would use it in the contest - per Andy's approval of course.

Re: 2016 Character Cup
Thank you for your comment! It's been my pleasure to promote online poll competitions like this because, honestly, I love them! :)

Talk about banners, this following banner is my main inspiration for making the banner. I might try pitching in another banner for Sweet 16 competitors with the same style, as you pointed out. While I might not be able to submit some headshots, I will help on the banner side of things.

Re: 2016 Character Cup
That's a cool banner too. I like how you changed the colors to fit the STV theme. If you can create a banner at the 16, 8, or 4 level, that would be awesome. The only thing is that all the contestants would have to be in it to be fair. That might be harder to do with more contestants. Or not - I really don't know. :-) Anyway, thanks again for the support.

I'm so said that Rachel Bloom didn't get nominated for an Emmy.

Yeah, it's quite disappointing that she doesn't have one. It has to be her year right now but well... :(
